4 Malaysians among recipients at British Council Study UK Alumni Awards

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Malaysians have been awarded for their excellence and contributions to communities at the British Council United Kingdom (UK) Alumni Awards 2021/22, yesterday.

The awards were presented to talents in the categories of Science and Sustainability, Culture and Creativity, Social Action and Business and Innovation.

Two graduates from the Imperial College, London received the Science and Sustainability and the Business and Innovation Award each.

“His experience from studying in the UK was translated into his efforts in helping Gamuda to front-run the sustainability space. The emphasis on sustainability is seen through the ‘Gamuda Green Plan’.

“His career experience in building tunnels for Kuala Lumpur metro lines, with multi-awards engineering innovation also led the industry in charge of sustainable development in the fight against climate change,” said the British Council in a statement, today.

Another Imperial College graduate, Melvin Poh received the Business and Innovation Award for her contributions to communities through Empirics Asia.

“Empirics Asia is an open-excess knowledge, sharing platform that seeks to facilitate the collective exchange of insights, ideas and experiences throughout Asia.

“The platform, which was founded by Melvin, also provides a democratic avenue for practical knowledge to be collectively published, shared and accessed in the region.”

The Social Action Award was presented to Izza Izelan for her contributions to women’s rights.

“Izza helped over 19,000 beneficiaries across Malaysia through her non-governmental organisation Pertubuhan Pembangunan Kendiri Wanita dan Gadis (WOMEN:girls).

“Her organisation also advocates for substantial changes in the Malaysian legal and culture system to form social policies to protect women and children.”

The Culture and Creativity Award was presented to senior lecturer at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dr Nur Izzati Jamalludin, who majored in Ethnomusicology at London’s King’s College.

British High Commissioner to Malaysia Charles Hay said it was wonderful to see Malaysians benefit from UK education, and went on to great career success.

“I particularly wish to congratulate the finalists of the UK Alumni Awards, as they have shown themselves to be leaders and trailblazers, making a difference in their profession and community.”

British Council Malaysia director Jazreel Goh said the awards were to celebrate the role played by international students in making the UK one of the most diverse, dynamic and rewarding higher education destinations for international study.

“The Study UK Alumni Awards have also allowed us to recognise our alumni, including the Malaysian alumni achievements and contributions to their communities.

“I’m proud of all our finalists who are working in a variety of pioneering areas and are playing a leading role in solving global challenges and shaping the world of tomorrow,” he said.
